Hmm, I realized I haven't updated this blog for some time, but I don't really have much to say. Oh no, perhaps I really am more boring than a virtually empty noticeboard with a conference poster on foreign loan words in Malay.
ムカつく!!
Anyway, school has been getting busier with presentation and essays coming up. Just today I had to give Kinokuniya a call about 2 manga series I wanted to buy for my Cultural Studies term paper on representations of Victorian England in shoujo manga, and I had to go all the way down to Liang Court to pick up one of the series that was reserved for me. 7 books of Godchild + 1 book of Kuroshitsuji (ok, this was my personal indulgence) cost me $74!! Now I now how expensive my hobbies/research interests are. =___=;
I also have a presentation to make on "Network Structure and Linguistic Change" for the GRS on Fri. As a Lit student, I find these articles on sociolinguistics not only boring and opaque because of the jargon, but terribly disappointing. If this is what linguistics is about, I'm glad I have never had much to do with it.
Not only do linguists seem to spend lots of money on empirical research finding out things we already know ("our findings show that female characters in anime use gendered expressions and this promotes gender ideology" - duh!), some of their 'theoretical' writings are too scientistic and poorly theorized and seem to amount to little more than making the facts fit a formula. Maybe I'm generalizing based on a few articles I've read, but these articles are supposed to be seminal works from an introductory reader...
As my friend Yi Qing pointed out some time ago, it really does seem strange to have 2 disciplines as different as Lit and Lang in the same department.
Ok, enough of griping about my presentation. There's lots more work to be done and I had better go to bed now.
