the space between words

I have been to Heaven once. It was a dessert food hall in a department store in Tokyo.

There is absolutely NOTHING in Singapore that comes close to the extravaganza of cakes, chocolates, cookies, puddings, jellies, mochi and all other kinds of sweets dreamt up by the human imagination that can be found in a Japanese food hall. But thank goodness, there are still places here where I can satisfy my cravings for delicious desserts.

I went out to Orchard today to run some errands and was looking forward to treating myself to Haato ice cream at Wheelock Place after my work was done. But after going up and down through all 4 storeys of the building, I realised to my disappointment that the Haato outlet was no longer there!!

I was pretty upset, as I had PLANNED to eat Haato's ice cream because I knew I should save money and eat a cheaper dessert than other things I had in mind, and I had DELIBERATELY eaten less for lunch to save money and stomach space for dessert and yet!!!... I wasn't going to be denied my long-awaited dessert just like that, so I made my way down to Canele at Paragon.

Although Canele cannot be compared to a department store food hall with its dozen patissieries and chocolatieries all vying for your attention (and wallet), it presented me with enough choice to make me hover before the display case trying to decide which type of cake I should choose.

Due to the influence of Seiyou Kottou Yougashiten ~Antique~, I had wanted to try a "Cassis", but I remembered it was autumn already and Canele was not likely to have it. I also wanted to take a closer look at the Mont Blanc in the corner, but a woman making an order was blocking it. So in the end, I decided to try the "Le Royale".

It was a thin, rectangular slice of cake with mousse made of 64% dark chocolate, hazelnuts and rum. The layers of mousse were so substantial that I needed to use a bit of strength to slice through the cake with my fork, and it was full of rich chocolatey goodness which wasn't too sweet and heavy on the palate. I couldn't really taste the rum and I would have liked the flavour to be slightly stronger, but I think it did make me feel a bit tipsy later on my way home.

The cake was a little pricey at $7 a slice but it was delicious and it made me feel happy, and I live by the belief that, if I'm going to eat something, it had better be worth the fat intake.

There was a couple next to me in Canele who ordered a classic French chocolate cake, and left after eating only half the slice. Cake-eaters like them should burn in Hell.
