These past 2 weeks have reminded me once again of how good it feels to meet up with friends, reminisce over old times and catch up on what has been going on in our lives. My social life has not been this busy since... well, ever.
Last Friday (15 Aug), I went back to school for lunch with Joan and Leon, and then chatted with Kevin for a while at the anime club booth, and then left in the evening to attend the FASS prize presentation ceremony. It felt really good to see Joan and Leon again and revisit our old practice of post-lecture lunches and frank talk about all things from schoolwork to phallic symbols to reproductive health.
On Sunday (17 Aug), I attended the Anime Club alumni chalet, where I met up with my dearest senpai (except Adnan-sama who could not come ;__;) as well as seniors who had steered the club in its earliest days. It was good to see the people who had first brought me into the Anime Club again, and to get to know some of the seniors whom I had only known by name or been introduced to very briefly when I was still an undergrad. Here are some pictures Shilei and I took at the chalet: http://s34.photobucket.com/albums/d141/okaru85/nus%20anime%20club%202008/alumni%20chalet%2017%20aug%202008/
Jul did lament to me when we were eating that we actually knew very little about what was happening in each other's private lives, but I think it is sometimes not necessary to know every detail about who's marrying who and who is getting a promotion at work - it simply suffices to be in the company of people you like and to hear their voices and see their smiles again.
We tried to trace the history of the club, and it turns out that we're turning 10 next year! I hope to organize a birthday bash for all the past and present committee members and maybe also track down the elusive pioneer Cedric, the legendary "shuai" cosplayer who remains shrouded in the mists of ancient history.
We've really come a long way and I think the most important thing we got out of all those years of hard work was the friendships that we still share today, and that's certainly worth celebrating. Reboot, our 2nd generation chairperson, put it very succinctly when he said that the most important thing is "to remember to have fun". The current exco may not realize this now, but I hope they will when they have spent a few years in the club.
On the following Monday, I went back to school again to meet PY, Minwei and Diana for lunch in the Arts Canteen. Unfortunately, unexpected circumstances once again prevented Diana from meeting us. However, we did manage to spot Calvin in the lunch crowd and invited him over to our table, where he almost made Minwei burst her bladder from laughing at his silliness.
The next day, I was back in school yet again, but this time, I was there to read my books in the library before heading down to Vivocity for dinner with some of my JC classmates. And surprise surprise, I met QH in the library! He was back in school to solve some problems with his project from last semester. So we ended up studying in the library again, just like in the not-too-faraway past when we were preparing for our HT and FYP respectively...
After spending the whole day in the library, I took a bus down to Vivocity and had dinner and desert with KR, Sharon, PY, Doreen, Van, Daryl and Derek. It was supposed to be a gathering for the Maths students with Mr "Maths" Tan, but he had urgent work to do and couldn't make it in the end.
But I still had lots of fun catching up with my classmates, especially with KR, who I see only once a year. I seldom miss KR consciously, but whenever I do see him, I remember how much I've missed him, how much I wanted to talk to him again and to ask him about how things are going over there in Cambridge.
And although I wouldn't have believed it 4 years ago, it was an immense pleasure chatting with Daryl and talking rot, or "intellectual discourse" as he called it, with him again.
It also seems that a new couple has sprung up out of our JC groupings. I'm a little surprised, given that the guy in question is the crappiest clown and biggest flirt in the class, but things look like they are going pretty well and I should and will wish them all the best, despite everything that has happened.
Ok, I think I should end here. I have yet another social function to attend this Friday - Laremy's NS plays are premiering at the Esplanade as part of the OCBC Singapore Theatre Festival, and almost half of the Lit Hons cohort is going down to support him. It's going to be an absolutely fantastic night. ^^
