I had a GREAT night out last night.

After many failed attempts, I finally managed to attend the latest Lit Hons gathering, which was a dinner + movie + drinks affair originally suggested by Sarah and organized by the dutiful Qiurong. Qiurong, Stefan, Kim, Benita, Shi Ping and I had dinner at Eclectic Attic, an antique shop cum restaurant in Plaza Singapura that had the prettiest and quirkiest eighteenth-century furnishings. It reminded us of Jane Austen - and Dr SA's office. But the food was pretty good and reasonably priced, and they actually served dainty tea cakes on a two-tiered platter!! All they needed to complete the picture was Sebastian the butler. I am definitely going back there again to enjoy my food slowly, cos we had to rush through our dinner to make it time for the movie (people being late again, as usual).

While we were having dinner, some of my friends saw a familiar face walk by outside. I saw that it was actually my long-lost senior Selene, whom I have not heard from for at least a year, and I called her in and we chatted for a while. It turns out that Selene knows Joan from another Lit module. It really is a small world, especially where Lit students are concerned.

After chowing down our food, we went off to watch The Dark Knight. I have never been very interested in movies based on superhero comics (correction - I have never been very interested in Hollywood movies in general), but I wanted to catch this movie only because of all the hype surrounding Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. And I think Ledger deserves all the praise he has gotten, for his performance was simply electrifying. I felt that most of the other characters were a bit flat, even Batman, but the Joker was frighteningly incomprehensible and chillingly real. I also felt that the movie had quite a bit in common with the anime Monster (although Johan is scary in a very different way), and that it was trying to make some profound deconstruction point about Batman "complet[ing]" the Joker and vice versa, but the fast-paced action scenes indicate that the movie was obviously not made for audience contemplation. My brain simply shut down once the car chase scenes came on, But the fight scenes were exciting and well-chereographed and I totally agree with Kim that Batman's voice is veeeeery cool. Although in real life one would think he had bronchitis. Go watch the movie and hear it for yourself ;)

After the movie, we headed down to Brewerkz at Riverside Point for drinks and chatting. I have never heard so much gossip about the Lit department and its denizens exchanged within 4 hours before. And we also managed to learn a bit more about Qiurong, whom we know now is actually a sweet, sentimental, devoted boyfriend beneath the cool, nonchalant exterior. And I also accidentally outed myself because of Laremy!! Argghh. >__<

Kim was so kind to give us all a lift home, and thanks to all of them, I had a wonderful time! Hope to see more people turning up for our next gathering!
