the space between words

Ok, after talking about Dr Y in my previous 2 posts, it's time to talk about 2 great girlfriends I made thanks to Dr Y's classes.

I first got to know Diana during EN2111 tutorials. I can't really explain it well, but I was attracted to her and wanted to get to know her better. I suppose you can say I felt that there was some sort of chemistry between the 2 of us. So after one particular tutorial, I asked her if she wanted to have lunch together. We ate at the Grinning Gecko where we laughed over all the funny things that were said during the tutorial, and I guess we took off from there =)

Diana is a very cheery person with a hearty sense of humour, and being with her never failed to brighten up my day and make me look on the lighter side of life. That's why I was quite shocked to find out about her condition, as I had thought she was a strong person who took all the obstacles of life in her stride. So I was very worried when she took leave of absence for one semester and I couldn't reach out to her and help her in any way. It made me realise how inept one could be when faced with a friend's deeply personal troubles which only he or she can fully understand. It was an instance where I actually understood the concept of "irreducible Otherness" in a more than theoretical sense. Diana has since pulled through and I hope she knows that whenever she feels unhappy or anxious, I'm always there to support her in her struggles.

I met Joan when I took the 20th century module (the level 3000 one) in my third year. She was in the same 9am tutorial as I was (together with Kan Kan and Angela, as Dr Y remembers so well) and I think the same thing with Diana happened with Joan and I... I asked her out for lunch at the old Arts canteen, and we began talking, first about Dr Y (I'm making Dr Y sound like the perfect icebreaker and conversation piece...) and then about other things such as our philosophy of life, our views on boyfriends (mine theoretical, as usual) and our need for the occasional 'bimbo' reading material. Joan has since become a close friend, and it's due to her that I got to know my JC senior-now-turned-junior Leon. I've really enjoyed all the "post-post-colonial" lunches we have had together, and as Leon seems to be a sensible, caring, intelligent and interesting person, I think he'll be able to make Joan happy, and so, putting my usual skepticism aside, I wish the two of them the best =)
