It's Valentine's Day again. No, you are not going to get the yearly griping about mass market capitalism disguised in sugary sweet chocolate and overpriced roses from me this year. I'm over all that.
I'm just going to write about some interesting things tangentially related to V Day that happened to me today.
1. I had my first 'proper' supervision session today. Dr Y was very helpful and he gave me lots of things to think about, without forcing anything on me. That was really good; I like a man who respects my independence =P
2. Dr Y tried to mitigate his criticism about my first chapter (which was well-deserved) by telling me "[my] scrupulousness is a virtue". And he lavished quite a bit of praise on my "elegantly argued, precise, scrupulous [again!] reading" of Mrs Dalloway. A bit of praise is no doubt flattering, but I wonder how he can tell how "scrupulous" I have been if he relies on me to tell him what is inside the three novels...
3. I met Pei by chance in the Arts canteen and she was so excited that she started gushing, really loudly, "OH WY, YOU ARE DRESSED SO PRETTILY TODAY!! DO YOU HAVE A DATE LATER?? WHERE ARE YOU GOING, WHERE ARE YOU GOING, WHERE ARE YOU GOING??!!"
And I was like, "I am going to get a sandwich..."
4. After I had finished my tortilla wrap (I decided not to have a sandwich, which was getting predictable), I met Benita and Kim, who invited me to go join Pei in the EN Hons Room. So instead of going to my now-not-so-secret hideout, I went to the Hons Room and ended up chatting with Pei and Kim for about an hour. It was real fun gossiping with them again after not seeing them for so long! The only bad thing was that the guy next door probably heard everything we said about our respective supervisors and other lecturers. Thank goodness he's from the EL side of the department...
So that's all for this year's V Day post.
