The Straits Times published an NTU report the other day on how most people in Singapore society are still averse to homosexuality. As a strong sympathizer, I'm really disappointed. Just because the religions or cultural values of the majority don't condone homosexuality doesn't mean that the homosexual minority should be deprived of their rights as citizens of the nation, and more fundamentally, as human beings. What harm does a homosexual couple's private sex life inflict on you? And who says that homosexuals can't have "families"?

And I don't think a state should be based on a "statement of values" rather than a "statement of rights and obligations". Although it is unavoidable in a democracy for the views of the majority to inform the way the state functions, such a principle of organizing the state permits dominant groups in society to impose their hegemonic definitions of normality on others, with no respect for and legal protection of individual differences.
