the space between words

I read a newspaper article yesterday morning that really infuriated me. Powerhouse in St James Power Station refuses to give free Ladies' Night drink coupons to women over 35 years of age simply because they are considered too old and unattractive to their male clientele!!! Has the world really changed much since Women's Lib in the '60s?

There are three reasons why I don't patronize clubs.

1. I don't drink alcohol.

2. If I wanted to get my eardrums blasted off, I'd go to a J-rock live concert.

3. I don't intend to be scrutinized like a product undergoing QC by the bouncers of patriarchy as they guard the entrance to the exclusive world of young and beautiful female sex objects and ogling male stares of approval. And be awarded 3 drink coupons if I pass the test or none at all and be labelled "FAULTY GOODS - PLS REJECT" if I fail to meet their limited definitions of female beauty.

These door policies are extremely insulting to women. They send out the message that the worth of a woman can be determined based on how young she is, how pretty she looks and how little she wears. Older women may have lost their smooth skin and perfect figures, but that doesn't deprive them of the right to have fun with their girlfriends on a night out in town. And in fact, this entire practice of Ladies' Night is a thinly-disguised exercise in using women as mere tools to attract more male customers to these clubs. Even if I do drink alcohol and find the free drinks and discounts attractive, I still wouldn't go to a club on Ladies' Night and be complicit with this exploitation of women. We need to show the male chauvinists who run the clubs and who patronize it in search of dating prey that we women can bloody well pay for our own drinks and have fun without being used as bait.
