Exams are finally over!!!
This has been the worst exam period in my life here in NUS. I had the immense bad luck to fall ill with a serious viral infection on the first day of exams, and being down with high fever, a runny nose and a cough that won't go away totally messed up my study schedule. As a result, I have attempted the Tragedy, JS, Crit Theory and History exams barely prepared. Thank goodness I usually put in a fair amount of work on a day-to-day basis, otherwise I would have been totally screwed this exam period. >__<
But now exams are over and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. If I was graduating, this would be my last sem in NUS and my last time taking exams! Imagine that. But for me, it's probably just the beginning of many more exams to come...
Hmm, now for the mandatory review of what I've done for the whole sem. This sem has been a rather fruitful one. The Tragedy module has been very interesting, and I especially like the way the course was structured to make us think about shifting conceptions of the tragic and the heroic. I know quite a lot of people don't like Wally very much, and I suppose he can be a bit *ahem* excitable about certain things, but I don't mind him and I even have weird dreams of him cooking spaghetti! Haha.
Crit Theory has been my biggest bugbear the whole sem, but looking back on it now, it has definitely been, in Derrida and Prof Phillips' words, an "event" in my life. I've discovered how productive critical theory can be in interpreting the things that go on in our world (even the most mundane things like the backs of cereal boxes) and hopefully, with this new 'knowledge' I have, I can do something to transform the way I think about things I have taken as 'natural', as well as the conditions I live in. Ok, Prof Phillips can give me full marks now. =)
However, the History module has been quite a disaster and unless you like lecturers who are totally disorganized and love pushing overly-simplistic, deterministic, vulgar Marxist paradigms of modernization, I wouldn't recommend the module.
Well, now that third year is behind me, it's time to look forward to the Hons year! PY and I are really excited about writing our HTs, and we both have broad topics in mind already. I'm going to spend my summer holidays preparing well for my HT, and I do hope I have a good time working with my supervisor on it (no offence to HP). But for now, I'm going to take a short break, relax and read my Angel Sanctuary manga and think about how it has intertextual allusions to the Bible, Greek mythology and (possibly) Paradise Lost. Haha, one never stops being a Lit student.
