the space between words

I've been chanting "shantih shantih shantih" on my msn nick almost all the semester, and even though the exams have finally ended, I've still not found peace!

(Ok, if you're not in the mood to listen to groaning and ranting, then you can leave now.)

I've been trying to plan my timetable for next semester, and it's been so bloody difficult. I can't seem to find enough modules I'm interested in to take next semester. I've done most of the 3000-level lit modules that are offered next semester, and all the modules I had planned to take have mysteriously disappeared! "Romanticism" and "Postmodernism and Postcoloniality" have strangely vanished from the list, despite being 'staples' of the Lit department, and the JS module "Japanese Film and Literature" is also gone! GONE!!!

So I thought, why not do another 4000-level Lit module instead of 3000-level Lit modules and UEs, so that I wait for the good stuff to appear again next academic year and have an easier time studying in my Honours year as well? But I'm already planning to do Modern Critical Theory next semester, which is notoriously difficult, and Diana persuaded me against self-destruction by taking another 4000-level module together with Crit Theory. So I'm back to square one. And when I think about how I may not even get Crit Theory after the seniors have had their pick -- no, I don't even want to think about that.

And then there's the major mix-up with Intro to Film Art. I was under the impression that I could take the module as a UE and that would be alright as long as I did not apply for Intro to Film Studies, which is the film module for Lit students. I had actually wanted to take the latter this past semester but it clashed with Singapore Film. So I thought I could just take the equivalent and enjoy another semester under Dr Y.

But I was in for a rude shock when I checked the IVLE webpage for Intro to Film Art. It turns out that Lit majors are not allowed to take that module at all! The only exception would be for first-year students who have not decided yet whether they wish to become Lit majors; they would not be able to take Intro to Film Studies in the future. I emailed Dr Y to clarify my doubts, and he told me it was true I could not take his module. I just received his email this morning and have been in a state of dejection for the whole day... And then I come online and my friend tells me he's going to take Intro to Film Art next semester!

Q_____Q

I'm crying all over it. I wanted to take that module so badly! And does this mean no more modules under Dr Y... for the rest of my life??

I have sorta solved my problems by forcing myself to take "Why History? The 20th Century" and "Popular Culture in Contemporary Japan" as UEs and to give up hope for "Japanese Film and Literature" to make a comeback. I figure that with my History background and my interest in *some* aspects of Japanese popular culture would stand me in good stead. But it's been around 3 years since I have touched History... oh dear oh dear.
