After months of dragging out the competition (with 2 revival sessions, no less!), Superband has finally ended. And suprise, surprise, Milubing won and Soul was second runner-up.
I have always held the impression that Soul had a much bigger fan base than the schoolboyish, not-so-good-looking (but hey, Soul isn't pretty boy material either) and well, silly trio. But the Straits Times was definitely more clued-in than I was when they printed a much bigger picture of Milubing than the other contestants in their article and used a screenshot of them again in the TV listings' highlights section. Never underestimate the power of the media...
Lucify made an extremely, superbly, fantastically mind-blowing entrance when they coasted into the Indoor Stadium on motorcycles, IN FULL VK INDIES GET-UP. With fake fur, leather, tartan prints, loads of black eyeliner and even black lipstick!!! And Malice Mizer-style colour coding!!! *____*
And they even performed in true VK indies style as well! Complete with heavy X-Japan-influenced guitars, prominent bass, staring down the audience, raw, unpolished singing and the occasional slip-up in the guitar solos XD They only needed some screaming, scratching and spitting out weird stuff at the audience to be full-blown VK indies. But then again, that was the Singapore Indoor Stadium and not a Japanese livehouse...
Brandon felt that their rendition of Xiao Wei was not very satisfactory but I guess I'm more lenient when it comes to VK indies bands. For me, technical skills need not be perfect for what counts most is sincerity and passion in making music. If I can hear the sincerity in the performance, if it gets my groove, then I'm happy enough. Of course, if the band has the skills of X Japan or Diru or Aushvitz, then all the better for the local J-rock scene... ^___^
And by the way, what is this song "Xiao Wei"? Everybody kept harping about it being so popular and familiar but I've never heard this song before....?___?
And I just have to say this, even though I may get mauled to death by fanatic fangirls: the tacky gold jumpsuits with the purple SOUL splashed all over the chest and legs just screamed DESPERATE HIPHOP BOYBAND-WANNABE GETAI AH BENG CIRCUS TROUPE.
Well, now that Lucify has probably scared off a good number of wannabe VK fans with their indies look, it's back to seeing them perform J-rock covers at the Street Fest. Welcome back, Lucify!
